Ceramic Dump May 2025
First time I used underglaze on a leather hard piece
First time using underglazes and carving! Excited to see how this one comes out of the kiln
batch of things from my home wheel~
First time using a cone 10 clay! I’ve glazed the bud vase but the pedestal jewelry holder thingie is nowhere to be found :(
Update: I threw some bowls
but i’m not totally completely happy with them. I have been trying to practice repetitive forms as my next level up in ceramics but that has been so difficult. It would probably help if I was more exact with my measurements (throwing gauge, chopstick trick, etc.) but have been just “eyeing" it and I don’t think that’s been very successful. I did have a better throwing day than yesterday (Can’t Throw Bowls). I think the problem yesterday was the malleability of the clay—it was too hard [literally]. I reclaimed a bunch of clay yesterday and today (I actually emptied my bucket which was incredible satisfying) which left me with much softer clay to work with. I ended up carving the bowls from yesterday: a ginko leaf bowl and one with dandelions and leaves. I actually hate dandelions in my yard but they were easy to carve. There is pressure to make drawings/paintings/any other additional decoration on ceramics look good but also there is less pressure than a drawing or painting because I am not (or rather, cannot be) attached to whatever I’m making in case it turns out terrible or something goes wrong along the way.
I tried to throw identical “raised” plates and they are similar but the donut foot of one is clearly bigger than the other. To be fair, at some point there was an air bubble in the plate with the smaller donut that kind of made one of the donut walls very thin, so I did the best I could with what I had. I threw a matcha bowl as well just for funsies.

^^ The two bowls that made it
BOWLS. I cannot seem to throw an even bowl. I threw around seven or eight today and none of them turned out the way I wanted and only one survived (and even that took sheer will to save). I threw some at the studio today and even some at home and they were all prone to a weird wobble. Sometimes if I don’t throw for a while I need to re-learn how to center and position my body etc. but today was a very off throwing day.
Carved some dandelions and ginko leaves on bowls~
